Occasionally an item will get returned to a Library branch but will not get checked in by staff.  If you have returned an item but notice that it still appears as checked-out in your account, please notify the Library immediately.  Once we have been notified, the item will be marked "Claims Returned" and the following steps will be taken:

  • The item will be removed from your viewable list of items out, but stays on your record.  Any overdue fees from the item are removed from your account while Library staff searches for the item.
  • The item is put on the Library Search LIst.  Staff at each branch look for the item several times over an 8-week period.  You, too, should continue to look for this item at home, school, etc.
  • The item will be cleared from your account without penalty if:
    • the item is found as a result of the search or,
    • the item is found by another borrower and checked out or,
    • the item is found by you and checked in
  • Library staff is confident that if an item has been returned, it will be located within the 8-week search period.
  • If the staff or you do NOT locate the item during the 8-week search period, the item will continue to remain on your account with a "Claims Return" status.
  • The Library reserves the right to bill you for the replacement cost of the item if you do not notify the library promptly, or if the item is not found during the 8-week search period.
