Hi Rob,
The reminder notice you received via email contains information about our renewal policy; i.e. the default number of times it is possible to renew an item in our system as long as no one else is waiting for the item.
Thus, you can normally renew an item 4 times, but only if no one else has requested it.
When you are logged into your library account and looking at the number of renewals remaining, this info should be the more accurate info; as it is updating from our catalog in real time. The number of renewals showing in your account considers pending requests. If someone else has placed a request for the title you've got checked out (and we do not have other copies available to fill that request) the number of renewals remaining will display as 0, nd the option to renew disappears.
If in turn, the request for the item is cancelled or filled by another returned copy, the number of renewals you see available to you will automatically update.
We hope that helps clarify the different numbers you are seeing.
Best,
David
