Q. Holds Self Pickup Security Concern
ANSWER Last Updated: Jun 23, 2022 Views: 86
In general, our patrons are quite enthusiastic about the switch to picking up their own holds. This decision was based on 2 factors:
1. Patrons would have more privacy when they request an item, since nobody else would see either what they have requested or what they're checking out.
2. Library staff would be freed up to handle other responsibilities, thereby reducing overall expenses.
You are correct that anyone could pick up a request from the shelf. However, each item on the "holds" shelf has been designated for a single borrower, and anyone attempting to check it out would be blocked from doing so.
As you discovered, items can be taken out of the library inadvertently or intentionally. The security system was very expensive to maintain, and it wasn't stopping enough theft to justify the expense. We have found that people who are determined to steal or keep materials will do so, whether there is a security system in place or not.
Thank you for your concern.
